The story of Cain and Abel is often preached in churches, used specifically to show believers the importance of giving their first fruits to God (Genesis 4 v 1 – 15). For me however, the Lord’s displeasure was stirred towards Cain for an entirely different reason. You see, God looked beyond the offering brought. He looked at the heart behind the offering, His eyes taking note of the hidden thoughts that no-one else could see. Murderous intentions had already began brewing deep within Cain. The seed of sin that had been planted within Adam and Eve, was taking root and thriving within the soul of their son. God pleaded with him, trying to shift his feet back to straighter paths: “Sin is crouching at your door,” He cried. “It desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” We know the story. Even having been warned by God Himself, Cain did the unthinkable and killed his own brother. Dear friend, you and I have no power against sin. We cannot resist temptation, we cannot stop it from destroying our lives and our families. Only Jesus has such power. For you to defeat sin, you need to become a child of God so that the Sin-Destroyer, Jesus Christ, can come and live inside of you. Then, together with Him, you will win – and win again!
