PERFECT LOVE

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4 v 18

Perfect love knows neither boundaries, barriers, limitations nor conditions. It sacrifices wholeheartedly and is vehement in its devotion. The love of God towards mankind embodies such perfection. Yes indeed, His love toward us is perfect – and shall forever remain so. Now, what about our love toward Him?

When we first come to Christ, our feelings for Him are a response to what He has done for us. For many believers, this commitment is performance-based. Not their performance, mind you – but His! If He coddles and blesses in the manner they desire, their tenderness knows no bounds. However, if His will lines not up with their own, their affections wane, frustration and bitterness setting in. Nevertheless, as we grow in Christ, allowing His perfect love to saturate our hearts, our devotion to Him begins to imitate His devotion to us! Unconditional love births unconditional love, slowly yet steadily. Consider the martyrs, those precious saints who declared their faithfulness to Him when all else seemed lost. They understood that His will superseded their own. They understood that He is worthy of all praise and adoration whether or not they comprehended the mystery of His ways. They trusted Him implicitly, believing that the darkest hours of their suffering would magnify His name, even more than their lives. While we will not all be martyrs, we can all love Him with the same unconditional zeal, never allowing circumstances to daunt our praise. In this way, we love Him as we should. We, dear friend, as flawed as we are, get to thrill the heart of God!
