Holy Highway

Isaiah 35:8-10 carries a wonderful promise for the child of God. Let us read such together:

“A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it; it shall not be found there. But the redeemed shall walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

This passage is directed at the believer. We are the redeemed, the ransomed, the sanctified. From the moment we call upon the name of the Lord and He becomes our Saviour and we His children, our feet shift off the pathway to destruction and onto the Highway of Holiness. Such a highway is described in the above reading. Those traversing life via this avenue experience His protection, favour and joy. What thrills me in particular is the statement, “Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray.” I find this marvellously comforting. It speaks to me of Father God being wonderfully patient and longsuffering with His children, even when they make foolish decisions. Being foolish does not derail us from the Highway of Holiness. God steadies our feet, engages in the necessary damage control and bids us try again. Naturally, we cannot use such a Scripture to excuse rebellious behaviour. We cannot act intentionally like an idiot and expect no consequences. However, even when we are faithless, God is faithful. All we need do is pause, sincerely repent and we will find that the way beneath our feet is still that of the redeemed. Jesus declared that once we belong to Him, no one is able to snatch us out of His hand (John 10:28). Once we belong to Him, the heaven-bound Highway of Holiness becomes the ground beneath our feet, even in our most foolish of moments. Jesus will never give up on us. Let us never give up on Him.
