He is Everything
In John chapter 10, our Saviour described Himself not only as the good shepherd but also as the door to the sheepfold. “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep” (v 7) and “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (v 11). Our Lord is simultaneously both door and shepherd. Let me explain. Firstly, He is the door to eternal life. “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me,” Jesus declared in John 14 v 6. Believing in Him means both heaven for eternity and fellowship with God Almighty, right here, right now and forevermore. Conversely, rejecting Him means separation from the Creator and darkness everlasting. He is the door. And, He is also the shepherd who leads us to the door. For those who choose to accept Jesus – and hence go through it – He remains their perpetual shepherd. How does He lead to the door? “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12 v 32). In short, Jesus is irresistible. He rides on the words of witness spoken by His children, piercing the hardest of hearts and wooing the sinner into His arms. Once accepted, He remains within the fledgling believer, leading and loving, guarding and guiding. He is the good shepherd, first seeking out the woeful wanderer and then, once found, keeping them safe by His side. Our Jesus is marvellous. He is so many things. He is everything.
