No Buts, Only Belief

The story of our Lord feeding the five thousand is packed with fundamental faith lessons. Most believers are familiar with the tale. In John 6:8-9 we read: “One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ‘There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?’” This statement by Andrew comes immediately before Jesus worked a mighty miracle of multiplication. What fascinates me is how close Andrew was to the Lord using his very hands to work the miracle, rather than His own. Jesus had challenged the disciples with: “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” He wanted their faith to rise up and then, He wanted them to apply such faith and consequently, see the problem solved. The disciples by this time had seen the impossible made possible time and time again. Surely, their faith was up to the challenge? Andrew’s almost was. A boy with five loaves and two fish had presented himself. Andrew would never have bothered bringing this to the Lord’s attention had he not had some thrilling notion that within that meagre meal was miracle-manifesting potential. This notion came and went however, a “but” quickly following on the heels of “there is a lad here…”. What would have happened should this hesitation not have featured? I can imagine Jesus turning to Andrew and saying, “Andrew you are right, this is exactly what we need. Go ahead and distribute those loaves and fish among your fellow disciples and ask them to feed the people.” What wonder would have filled the heart of Andrew as his fingers handled food that multiplied at his touch! Surely, he would never have been the same again. Unfortunately, this is not what happened. Andrew missed his moment. Dear friend, I want to encourage you today. Believe, recklessly. Do not allow doubt to dawdle on the heels of faith. Rather, squash those uncertainties as they rise. The Lord would work the impossible through you. Make the decision today to harbour no buts, only belief.
